Od 24. lipnja 1981. godine, prema svjedočanstvu šest župljana, u Međugorju se svakodnevno ukazuje Blažena Djevica Marija. U posljednjih 15 godina Međugorje je posjetilo više od 20 milijuna hodočasnika iz cijelog svijeta, pozvani od Kraljice mira, (kako se Gospa predstavila) koja u njima rađa duboku obnovu darivajući im mir i ljubav. Postaju svjedoci istine, ljubavi i mira.

Prozračna kraška zaravan površine 200 km "Brotnjo", gdje se nalazi Međugorje, spominje se još od 1306 godine. Etimologija riječi "Brotnjo" može se izvesti iz grčkog jezika (brio-klijati), (timos-trs ili čokot) što znači kraj bogat vinovom lozom. Austrougarsko razdoblje s kraja 19. i početka 20. stoljeća obilježeno je intenziviranjem i boljom organizacijom vinogradarsko vinarske proizvodnje. Ovdašnja vrhunska vina Žilavka i Blatina redovito su se nalazila na trpezama austrijskih dvorova. I danas se još uvijek u ovim krajevima proizvode ove dvije sorte vina vrhunske kvalitete.

Povijest ovog područja može se pratiti još od mlađeg kamenog i bakrenog doba, dok su tragovi ilirskih plemena (Daorsa) u razdoblju prije Krista i Rimljana do petog stoljeća poslije Krista, izuzetno jasni. Hrvati ove prostore nastanjuju u 7. i 8. stoljeću nakon bespoštednih borbi sa ostacima rimskih plemena, dok kršćanstvo primaju početkom 10. stoljeća u vrijeme gospodara Humske zemlje (Zahumlja) kneza Mihajla Viševića. Međugorska je župa utemeljena 1892.g. i stavljena pod zaštitu sv. Jakova, zaštitnika hodočasnika. Samo pet godina kasnije dovršena je stara župna crkva Sv.Jakova u Međugorju. Nova crkva je dovršena i blagoslovljena 19. siječnja 1969.g.

Since June 24^th 1981, according to what six inhabitants say, Virgin Mary has been appearing in Medjugorje every day. In the last 15 years more than million pilgrims from all around the world have visited Medjugorje, following the invitation from the Queen of Peace who gives them peace and love in return. In that way they become witness of truth, love, and peace. The 200 km large basin called “Brotnjo”, in which Medjugorje is settled, was first mentioned in 1306. The word “Brotnjo” roots from Greek, and means “rich in wine”.

The period of Austro-Hungarian rule was very much determined with a better and more organised wine production in the area. High quality wines Žilavka and Blatina which are produced here, were consumed on Austrian courts regularly.

The history of this area can be traced back in the early Stone and Copper age. The traces of Iliric tribes (Daors) from the period before Christ and on the other hand, until the 5^th century AD are quite clear. After fierce fights with the remaining Roman tribes, the Croats started to inhabit this area in the 7^th and 8^th century. They take on Christian faith in the beginning of the 10^th century, the period of prince Mihajlo Višević’s rule, the Lord of Zahumlje.

The parish of Medjugorje was established in 1982, and was put under patronage of Saint Jacob, the patron of pilgrims. Only five years later, the old parish Church of Saint Jacob was finished. The new church was finished and consecrated on January 19^th 1969.
